Grand Floridian Cafe Review: The Brunch We Didn't Plan (and That French Onion Soup)

Some of our best Disney meals are the ones we never planned. Grand Floridian Cafe was one of those. It was not on our list at all. We just got hungry at the right time, gave it a shot, and walked away with one of my favorite bites of the whole trip.

Here is how it happened, what we ate, and the one thing I would do differently.

    How We Ended Up There

We started the day at Magic Kingdom early, knocked out a few favorites like Peter Pan's Flight while the lines were short, and then hit that late-morning stretch where everyone is hungry but it is not quite lunch. We already had an early dinner reservation somewhere else that night, so a big midday meal did not make sense. Brunch did.

The Grand Floridian is a quick hop from Magic Kingdom, so we headed over and gave the cafe a try. That short trip off-park turned out to be half the fun. More on that in a second.

    The French Onion Soup

A crock of French onion soup with bubbly broiled cheese at Grand Floridian Cafe, the standout of our unplanned Disney World brunch

Let me get right to the star. The French onion soup was absolutely amazing. French onion is one of my favorite soups anywhere, so I have a high bar, and this cleared it. Rich broth, the good bubbly cheese on top, exactly what you want. I would go back for that soup alone, and honestly I probably will.

If you order one thing here, make it that.

    The Rest of the Brunch

No brunch is complete without mickey waffels

Brunch is a nice sweet spot on the menu because you get a mix of breakfast and lunch. We also had the Mickey waffles, which are an easy win with kids and taste as good as they look, and the avocado toast, which was a lighter option that hit the spot without wrecking our appetite for that early dinner later.

Avacado toast with fire roasted tomatoes

That was the whole point for us. We wanted a real sit-down meal, out of the sun and the crowds, that would not leave us too full for dinner. Brunch here did exactly that.

Book a Reservation (Learn From Us)

Here is the one thing I would change. We did not have a reservation, and brunch is a busy time, so we ended up waiting.

It worked out fine, and I will tell you why in a minute, but do yourself a favor and book ahead. Grand Floridian Cafe takes reservations, and grabbing one saves you the wait during that late-morning rush. If you know you want to try it, lock it in early rather than wing it like we did.

    The Unexpected Bonus

Here is the part that made the wait painless. While we waited, we walked around the Grand Floridian, and it was genuinely lovely. The lobby, the grounds, the whole resort has that flagship feel. We would not have wandered through it otherwise, and it turned a wait into a nice little break from the parks.

That is a quiet perk of eating at a resort you are not staying at. You get to see a piece of Disney you might never make time for, and the pace is calmer than anything inside the gates. A brunch off-park in the middle of a busy day is a reset button.

    The Bottom Line

Grand Floridian Cafe was not on our plan, and it became a highlight. If you want a calm, sit-down brunch that leaves room for an early dinner elsewhere, this is a great pick, especially if you are already near Magic Kingdom. Book a reservation so you are not waiting, order the French onion soup, and give yourself a few minutes to enjoy the resort while you are there.

I will be back. Mostly for the soup.
